Last Thursday, around 13:45 hours, a bomb attack in Palmanova interrupted the holiday season on the island of Mallorca. Official sources state that ETA, the Basque separatist terrorist organization, conducted the attack which killed two Guardia Civil policemen...

The results of Spain's General Election 2008 seem to bring little surprise for those who remember Mr Blair of the U.K. and Mr Schröder of Germany. According to preliminary forecasts, Mr Zapatero seems to carry away what could be considered a landslide victory for his socialist party...

Just before the general election tomorrow on Sunday, March 9th, 2008, ETA killed Mr Isaias Carrasco, a former town councillor in his Basque home town. Still, Spaniards will have to vote tomorrow for a new government and it seems quite likely that Mr Zapatero will win again, though many did not think that this could be possible if asked only about two years ago...

Last week, the performance of pupils on the island have been controversially discussed in local and national newspapers. With a local government that likes to boast with words like "trilingual", I thought to give it a try on the BOIB site of the "Govern de les Illes Balears" which you can find here. This site is what they refer to the "official gazette" where announcements and regulations are published...

All residents from European Union countries must register with the police if they live for more than 3 month a year on the island. First address where to register is the Policia Nacional at the Paseo Mallorca. The registration costs 6.70 Euros to be payed in the banks in the neighbourhood. Make sure you bring a copy of your passport with you. If not, you will have to go to the nearby copyshop and you can imagine what the copy will cost you there.... Being exposed to high levels of noise isn't any good for human ears nor for someone's well-being. Spain sadly ranks first in a European ranking of tolerated noise levels with some 80 decibels that have to be tolerated according to the current legislation. This is far more than what Italy allows for, which ranks second. Compared to Germany or Austria, Spaniards are exposed to extreme noise levels...

Since the beginning of 2007 the inheritance tax has changed significantly on the Balearic islands. While it used to be set at 40% in 2006, the local parlament approved the change to 1% on December 5th, 2006. Previously there was a tax exempt amount of 123.000 Euros, which has been cancelled with the new law.
