Since July 1st, 2009 the flag of the Balearic Islands flys over the island of Cabrera. The administration of the island has been transferred from the central government in Madrid to the authorities of the government of the Balearic Islands. According to news sources, the acquisition included a payment of almost 5 Million Euros... Cabrera is a small island off the south-eastern coast of Mallorca and it had been a military base for many years before being converted into a National Park. It consists of a total of 11 islands with a sensitive ecological systems providing habitat for many species unique to Cabrera. There are no permanent inhabitants on the islands, except some staff of the park. Access to the islands is only possible by boat which keeps visitor numbers low. Also, a permit is required to visit the island, which may be granted for a single day only. The islands covering an area of some 1569 hectares are reportedly home to some 150 different species of birds. Diving in the area around the islands is almost entirely forbidden, with only a few permits per year granted. For further information on the islands, read the full article on Cabrera. |
